A super-intelligent AI can theoretically house all possible computer programs in its memory at once. This means any program designed to prevent AI from causing harm may or may not reach a conclusion – mathematically, we can’t be certain. As a result, we cannot contain super-intelligent AI. This inability to ascertain the outcome renders any containment algorithm unusable, as expressed by Iyad Rahwan, a computer scientist from the Max-Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany.
Mitigating Super-intelligent AI Risks
One potential solution to the predicament is limiting the super-intelligent AI’s capabilities, such as restricting its access to certain networks. However, the 2021 study refutes this, arguing that it reduces AI’s potential.
